The dishonest steward did something right: when his Master
came and spoke with him, he changed his ways.
He listened and responded.
Of course, that’s why preach the message of our Master, Jesus Christ. We hope that others will hear the “good news” of Christ; that they’ll hear and respond. We hope that friends and family who’ve become
lukewarm in their faith will listen to God and respond. We hope that those who are considering an
abortion, will hear God and respond. We
hope that those who feel rejected by God and the Church will listen and
respond.
But, the most we can we do in our efforts to evangelize is to
present the “good news” as it is. And
that’s not an easy task; many have failed.
How many people in the world today have heard a false gospel . . . a presentation of Jesus Christ which is anything
but the message of Christ? And how many people cringe at the name of
Jesus because of many Christians’ poor representation of the gospel?
If we want others to actually hear and respond to the Lord,
we have to be true to the gospel message itself—with which we have been
entrusted. And the heart of the gospel
message is that God “has revealed his saving power.” That’s quite a truth to be revealed to us,
and for us to share! There is no one
outside the reach of God’s tender mercy.
God comes to all people, everywhere, saints and sinners alike.
If we preach that message by our words and actions, then
perhaps people will actually hear the truth of the gospel; they’ll listen and
respond. Of course, before we can preach
the “good news” to others, we ourselves must hear it and respond.
Our world is filled with “dishonest stewards;” it’s filled
with “sinners.” But by hearing the good
news of the Lord, perhaps they—and we—will respond. When the Lord moves our heart, our mind, and
our consciences, may we hear him and respond.
To lift our hearts to the Lord when he speaks is truly right and just.
